Set 1 Sounds

  • Set 1 speed sounds: these are sounds written with one letter
  • Set 1 sounds written with two letters (special friends)
  • Read simple words containing these sounds, by sound blending
  • Read words in carefully levelled Red, Green and Purple storybooks.

Each sound is linked to a picture hook and short rhyme to help children learn and remember them.

Clear pronunciation of sounds is extremely important. This video demonstrates how to say sounds clearly.

Learning to blend simple words:

Your child will learn to read words containing Set 1 Speed Sounds by blending sounds together to create words. We call this Fred Talk.

Fred Talk

Fred Talk is sounding out the word. In Reception, children will be introduced to a toy frog called Fred when he or she is ready to start blending sounds so they can read words. Fred can only say the sounds in a word and needs your child to help him to read the word. Fred will say the sounds and children will blend the sounds together to work out the word. For example, Fred will say the sounds c-a-t, and the children will say the word cat.

The video below explains the process of teaching blending and Fred Talk.
