Reading at Whytemead

At Whytemead, we believe that reading is at the heart of everything we do.

Developing a love of books and stories is a cornerstone of children becoming competent learners.

As the OECD states;

Reading for pleasure is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status.

With this in mind, we have carefully developed a whole school reading spine to ensure that all children have access to quality texts that they might not otherwise 'bump into'.

These books are studied by all children across the year in each year group. Our selection includes Sussex based authors, different genres, classics and books that have an important social and emotional voice.

We aim for children to be inspired by these texts and to become readers of many other books, perhaps some inspired by those on our reading spine.

Accelerated Reader

At Whytemead, we use Accelerated Reader to encourage a 'culture of reading'. 

We believe that using it helps “Just reading” to transform into high-quality reading practice that fuels growth: Reading quizzes monitor comprehension, while literacy skills and vocabulary quizzes extend student learning and build skills mastery.

Phonics

At Whytemead we use Read Write Inc. Phonics as it teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.
